A herbarium (plural "herbaria") is a collection of preserved plant specimens. These specimens may be whole plants or plant parts: these will usually be in a dried form, mounted on a sheet, but depending upon the material may also be kept in alcohol or other preservative.

In addition, each herbarium sheet contains a barcode. To ensure that the species‐identification algorithms are developed based on the species image rather than the text present on the specimen, the text and barcodes were blurred. Herbadrop is both an archival service for long-term preservation of herbarium specimen images and a tool for extracting information by image analysis. Developed by five institutes from Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands and Scotland it aims to be available to other herbaria in the future.

Over the past few decades, herbarium specimens have increasingly been used to study long-term changes in plant traits, phenology, and insect herbivory. In order to do this, recent specimens must be compared to older ones, and differences in key features tracked such that patterns can be discerned. But what if other factors are at play?
